Cooper Lake at a Glance
About Cooper Lake
Cooper Lake is one of East Texas's most beautiful and underappreciated lakes โ a 19,305-acre U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reservoir on the South Sulphur River in Delta and Hopkins counties. Completed in 1991, the lake was built for flood control and water supply, and the Corps retains ownership and management of virtually all of the shoreline. This means no private waterfront development โ and as a result, the natural shoreline character of Cooper Lake is among the most pristine of any large reservoir in the region.
The lake is flanked by Cooper Lake State Park, which encompasses two separate units โ South Sulphur and Doctors Creek โ totaling over 3,000 acres of parkland. The state park is best known for the DORBA (Dallas Off-Road Bicycle Association) trail system, widely regarded as among the finest cross-country mountain biking trails in Texas. Riders travel from across the state to ride Cooper Lake's technical single-track and flowy cross-country loops through the post oak woodland.
Beyond mountain biking, Cooper Lake State Park offers equestrian camping with dedicated horse facilities, primitive and RV camping, fishing piers, swimming, and excellent wildlife viewing. Deer, wild turkey, bobcats, and over 200 bird species inhabit the park and lake area. Sulphur Springs โ the Hopkins County seat with a hospital and full retail โ is approximately 20 miles south.
Fishing
Cooper Lake offers excellent multi-species fishing. Largemouth bass, crappie, catfish, white bass, and hybrid striped bass all inhabit the lake. The striper and hybrid striper fishing can be spectacular in fall and winter when schools push baitfish to the surface. Bass fishing in the creek arms and along the timbered Corps shoreline is productive year-round. The Corps and TPWD actively manage the fishery with stocking programs. Multiple public boat ramps and fishing piers provide excellent access.
Recreation & Activities
Cooper Lake State Park's DORBA mountain biking trails are the signature recreational draw โ the park has over 25 miles of professionally designed single-track through varied post oak terrain, ranging from beginner-friendly to technically challenging. The equestrian facility accommodates overnight horse camping with corrals and dedicated trails. Camping options range from primitive tent sites to full hookup RV pads. Swimming is permitted in designated areas. Kayaking and canoeing on the lake are excellent, particularly in the quieter coves away from boat traffic.
