About Lake Raven
Lake Raven is the beloved centerpiece of Huntsville State Park — a 25-acre fishing and paddling lake nestled within over 2,000 acres of longleaf pine forest in Walker County. One of the most visited state parks in Texas, Huntsville State Park draws hundreds of thousands of visitors annually to swim, hike, camp, fish, and paddle on Lake Raven's quiet, scenic waters.
The lake is entirely within Texas Parks and Wildlife's Huntsville State Park. There is no private waterfront real estate on Lake Raven — the entire shoreline is parkland. We include Lake Raven in our East Texas lake network as a key recreational reference point, particularly for buyers considering Lake Livingston (45 minutes east) or Lake Conroe (30 minutes south). Owning on either of those lakes puts one of Texas's finest state parks practically in your backyard.
The longleaf pine forest surrounding the lake is exceptional — one of the best-preserved longleaf ecosystems in East Texas, with wiregrass understory, red-cockaded woodpeckers, and the characteristic open, park-like forest character of the historic longleaf pine savannas. The park's position on I-45 between Houston and Dallas makes it one of the most accessible state parks in the state.
Fishing
Lake Raven offers quality largemouth bass, crappie, catfish, and bream fishing for park visitors. The lake is regularly stocked by Texas Parks and Wildlife and sees moderate pressure from campers and day visitors. Bass fishing around the lake's modest shoreline structure is productive in spring and fall. Fishing is permitted with a valid Texas fishing license. Bank fishing is accessible from several points around the lake, and canoe and kayak rentals are available at the park headquarters for those who want to fish from the water.
Recreation & Activities
Swimming is permitted in a designated area on Lake Raven during summer months — one of the only state park swimming areas in the region. Canoe and kayak rentals are available from the park, making paddling accessible even for visitors without their own equipment. The park has over 20 miles of hiking and nature trails through the longleaf pine forest, including several that circle the lake. Camping options include tent sites, screened shelters, and full-hookup RV pads. The park is particularly beautiful in fall when the pine forest takes on a golden character.

Huntsville State Park is located at 565 Park Road 40 West, Huntsville, TX 77340 — take I-45 Exit 109 and follow signs approximately 6 miles west to the park entrance. From Houston: I-45 North approximately 70 miles — about 1 hour. From Dallas: I-45 South approximately 180 miles — about 2.5 hours. Day use fee of $7/person applies; Texas State Parks Pass ($70/year) covers entrance for the pass holder and guests at all Texas state parks.
